According to new figures released by Beverage Can Makers Europe, almost 31 billion beverage cans were produced in Europe in the first half of 2013 - a 2.2% increase on last year.
For soft drinks, can production rose by 3.6% driven by a strong performance in Eastern Europe which increased fillings by 30%. In addition, both Denmark and Finland saw more than a doubling of soft drinks can production during the period compared to 2012.
For beer cans an increase of 1% was seen, which is a positive performance against a backdrop of a strong sports event-driven increase through 2012. The UK and other parts of Europe unsurprisingly experienced a lull during the first six months of 2013 due to the colder winter and spring. The UK, for example, saw a 2.8% decrease in total drinks can deliveries since last year, although it still maintains its overall position as the leading European country for beverage can production.
