Mater-Bi tableware by Huhtamaki is rigid and safe, very functional and perfect for every use. It is suitable for contact with hot food (up to a maximum of 70°C for half an hour) and its shape and thickness place it at the top end of its market.
The knives and forks were recently re-designed with a new profile yielding a thickness which ensures that the final product is both biodegradable and compostable.
The Belgian certification body, Vinçotte body has issued certification pursuant to EU standard EN13432 guaranteeing the transformation of Huhtamaki Mater-Bi® tableware into compost within 90 days if properly disposed of in an industrial composting plant.
Refuse, including its management and disposal, is one of the great priorities for environmental protection. Traditional disposable tableware generates mixed non-recyclable waste (leftovers, food, disposable tableware, paper and plastic bottles, etc.) which has to be disposed of in landfill or incinerated, thus worsening a situation which is already critical in a number of aspects. Unfortunately sorted collection is not always an easily implementable solution, especially at large-scale events, canteens or where a very large number of meals are served and the separation of refuse is difficult if not impossible.
This is why the use of disposable and compostable tableware ensures that mixed refuse can be collected unsorted and correctly disposed of in industrial composting plants, where it is transformed into soil fertiliser. This creates a virtuous cycle in which raw materials of natural origin are returned to the soil through processes of biodegradation and/or composting without the release of pollutants.
In order to satisfy the growing demand for eco-friendly products, in 2004 Huhtamaki launched its BioWare range of completely biodegradable and compostable disposable products derived from annually renewable resources. BioWare offers solutions meeting everyday needs, at the same time making a contribution to conserving our natural surroundings for the future.
All BioWare products, the raw materials used to make them, and the manufacturing processes employed have been designed in such a way as to reduce the environmental impact to a minimum. All BioWare products are compostable and certified pursuant to EU standard EN13432. All BioWare products are transformed into water, carbon dioxide and organic material if correctly treated in industrial composting plants.
