Orlen Eko, the Orlen Group Company, has aunched the most modern thermal waste treatment plant in Poland. The facility is the first plant in the country capable of thermal processing of external dried municipal sewage sludge.
Thanks to this project we have joined Europe`s most developed countries with facilities of this kind - said Pawel Krupa, the CEO of ORLEN Eko.
We are proud of this investment. First of all, because it solves one of our most important problems, the treatment of hazard waste. The Plant also diminishes the impact of waste on the surrounding environment. The initiative highlights the possibilities arising from Poland`s accession to the EU - said Krystian Pater, Member of the Management Board of PKN Orlen.
Orlen Eko was among the first companies within the Orlen Group that received PLN 19.5 m funds from The Sectoral Operational Programme "Improvement of the Competitiveness of Enterprises, years 2004 - 2006" - the document that sets out the framework for Structural Funds assistance following Poland`s accession to the European Union. The remaining funds were secured by Orlen Eko and PKN Orlen.
The Thermal Waste Treatment Plant cost PLN 123.3 m. The first stage of the investment which included the sewage sludge drying facility and depot park closed in December 2006 with PLN 18 m. The second stage totaled PLN 105.3 m and covered the construction of the thermal hazard waste treatment plant. The Plant`s annual treatment capacity equals 50,000 tonnes of waste, of which 40,000 accounts for PKN Orlen`s present and future needs. The remaining 10,000 tonnes of waste will be treated by Orlen Eko on a commercial basis to external entities.
The new plant conforms with the Best Available Technique requirements, other binding environmental regulations as well as BAT requirements defined in the European Commission Directive IPPC 2008/1/EC.
