STS extruders turn 20

The STS twin screw extruder is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. Over the years, the STS extruder series has established itself on the market as a high-performance quality product for a wide range of extrusion and compounding tasks.

When the first model of this extruder type was delivered 20 years ago, the STS twin screw extruder was able to achieve a specific torque of 8.7 Nm/cm³ at screw speeds of up to 600 min-1. The largest model at that time, with a screw diameter of 75 mm, had a maximum throughput of 1,200 kg/h. The following decades were marked by rapid and targeted further development of the technology, design and quality of this product line.

Today's STS Mc11 twin screw extruder series boasts impressively high performance and quality. It has a specific torque of 11.3 Nm/cm³ and screw speeds of up to 900 min-1. Its largest extruder , the STS 125 Mc11, reaches throughputs of up to 8,000 kg/h.

Last year, we were even able to reach a specific torque of 13.6 Nm/cm³ with the STS 75. This STS Mc Plus compounder thus achieves improved product quality and at the same time up to 20% higher throughput in the processing of all previously torque-limited products. Along with process-technical modifications, optimization of the drive’s key components is critical to this level of performance. The new STS 75 Mc Plus extruder is equipped with a high-power motor and a gearbox designed specifically for high torque. The proven high-performance materials utilized in the screw shafts provide full torque transmission from the gearbox to the screw elements, ensuring that high throughputs are reliably achieved.

The STS extruder series is equipped exclusively with high-quality Coperion-brand gearboxes manufactured in Europe. The extruders are produced at Coperion in Nanjing, China, in accordance with CE guidelines and the highest Coperion standards of quality. They are distinguished by their very attractive price-to-performance ratio. STS extruders combine the advantages of substantially standardized and thus cost-effective machine design with Coperion’s technical expertise. Screw elements and barrels are available in various materials from standard versions to wear and corrosion resistant solutions.

Originally the STS extruder was mainly applied for the modification of engineering plastics and masterbatch. After 20 years of continuous process technology development, today the STS extruder series has also proven successful in the processing of powder coating, cable masses, recycled plastics, regrind and much more.
