Sustainable packaging solutions for the food industry

Sustainable packaging solutions…

What awaits visitors at Booth E1 in Hall 10 at the 28th CFIA trade show in Rennes? “Groundbreaking, safe, and above all, sustainable packaging concepts for fresh meat, cold cuts, and fish,” says Südpack succinctly. Trend-driven solutions for snacks and fruit purees are also in the spotlight - along with package printing, which remains a core focus for the renowned film manufacturer. For those seeking a fully sustainable packaging system, Südpack’s revolutionary SPQ (Sustainable Print Quality) printing technology is hard to overlook.

From March 4-6, more than 2,000 companies will showcase their latest products and services for the food industry across 50,000 square meters of exhibition space at the Parc Expo in Brittany’s capital. Südpack will kick off this year’s trade show season with a wide selection of innovative new products, all with a clear focus on sustainability. “Our range of sustainable high-performance films and packaging concepts is extensive, covering virtually all applications within the food industry,” emphas Südpack. All solutions share the same stand-out features, combining optimal product protection with exceptional material-efficiency and resource conservation. Most importantly, they are recyclable. In short: Südpack products enable producers and packers alike to reduce the weight of each package and, ultimately, its environmental footprint.

Packaging solutions for fresh meat, cold cuts, and fish

Südpack offers an extensive range of thermoformable bottom webs, including both rigid and flexible films, which pair perfectly with the manufacturer’s peelable and multi-peelable top webs.

For sustainable packaging of sliced sausage, ham, or cheese in thermoforming packaging, Südpack provides mono-material solutions based on PP and PE, with certified recyclability of over 90%. These perfectly matched top and bottom webs deliver excellent mechanical and functional properties, such as peelability and sufficient stability for presentation on refrigerated shelves.

A highlight in terms of material reduction and recyclability is the next generation of PP- and PE-based flow packs. One striking example is the “ground meat in a pouch” solution, designed for packaging fresh ground meat. Compared to traditional solutions, this recyclable packaging concept achieves up to 60% material savings and significantly shrinks the product’s carbon footprint. Despite the reduced material input, Südpack customers can still rely on the necessary barrier properties and maximum product protection.

With Multifol, Südpack offers the perfect combination of minimal material usage and maximum product protection. Compared to conventional PA/PE structures, this high-performance film boasts around 30% less weight. Its excellent sealing performance ensures high package quality with a very low degree of leakage, even if the sealing surfaces are contaminated. Depending on specific requirements, this thermoforming application can be equipped with various barrier properties. Its outstanding puncture resistance makes it an ideal choice for efficient vacuum packaging of meat, fish, and products with bony parts, as well as for deep-freeze applications.

Specifically designed for modified atmosphere tray packaging, including foam trays, the Veraplex Drum top web is an ideal solution. This ultrathin, material-efficient barrier film stands out with its high puncture and tear resistance, glossy surface, and exceptional sealing properties - even on contaminated surfaces. This makes it the perfect choice for packaging meat, poultry, and fish.

Packaging solutions for snacks and fruit purees

At the CFIA trade show in Rennes, Südpack anticipates significant interest in its packaging solutions for snacks, fruit purees, and powdered products such as spices, coffee, and tea. Doypacks, flow packs, and spouted pouches, which are popular among manufacturers, packers, retailers, and consumers alike, are experiencing a genuine revival. This comes as no surprise, as lightweight pack-aging solutions - like those Südpack will showcase at CFIA - are now signifi-cantly more sustainable and climate-friendly, maximizing their environmental and economic advantages across the supply chain without compromise. Thanks to PP and PE-based films and closures - such as zippers, spouts, and valves - these packaging solutions are fully recyclable. They also help conserve re-sources by reducing material usage, while their lightweight design improves transport and handling efficiency and lowers costs.

The excellent processability and performance of each packaging component guarantee maximum reliability in terms of processes and packaging. Additionally, barrier properties tailored to the specific product ensure optimal protection and an extended shelf life. Recycling-friendly design, reduced packaging weight, superior product protection, and excellent performance - this is the winning formula for modern packaging solutions. However, it also represents a real challenge, particularly for sensitive products like food.

SPQ? Sustainable Print Quality!

Last but not least, visitors to the Südpack booth can explore the advantages of modern package printing and receive expert guidance. This technology sets new standards in terms of sustainability, efficiency, and quality - significantly reducing the carbon footprint of both flexo and gravure printing processes.
