Polykemi Group has now become the first in Kunshan, China, to be approved for expanded capabilities in upgrading of recycled plastic raw materials after completing an environmental certification process. With this milestone, Polykemi Group in China has invested in new equipment and can now produce plastic compounds from completely new types of recycled plastic materials.
Plastic recycling that meets market demand
Polykemi Group is the first company in 20 years to receive approval through an environmental certification process from the Environmental Administration in Kunshan, just outside Shanghai in eastern China. This approval enables processing alternative sources beyond conventionally recycled products that have traditionally ended up in energy recovery. As a result, access to recycled sources will increase significantly, further meeting the market’s growing demand for recycled plastic materials.
This development comes at a time when the demand for high-quality recycled plastic has never been higher, and shows no signs of slowing down. Polykemi Group’s approval also sends a strong signal to the industry that large-scale production of recycled plastic on a global level is possible.
Technical expertise and investments pave the way for a sustainable industry
In connection with the approval, Polykemi Group invested in updated equipment to handle and process plastic raw materials from a wider range of sources, such as dust, non-woven and fiber materials, thereby increasing the delivery capacity. Similar investments have previously been made by Polykemi Group at its production facility in Sweden. By developing and producing products based on recycled plastic raw materials, which also have a lower carbon footprint, Polykemi Group is well-positioned to produce larger quantities globally.
“This is a fantastic achievement for us, something we have worked long and hard for. The approval is a testament to our ability to adapt and expand our production according to market needs. It is yet another step to show that, on a global level, it is possible to produce and customize materials based on recycled plastic raw materials that meet very high-quality requirements.” says Magnus Lindahl, CEO China.

Local production increases opportunities for sustainable business
Since 2007, Polykemi has been manufacturing customized plastic compounds at the production facility in Kunshan. Now that Polykemi Group can also produce compounds based on these new types of high-quality recycled materials-upgraded and quality-assured-it brings direct benefits to local customers and producers by improving availability and enabling more flexible deliveries. The ability to produce high-demand compounds in Asia offers shorter transport distances and thereby reduced emissions in trade with local partners.
“The future for recycled and customized plastic materials is bright. We can now offer faster deliveries and even larger quantities of more sustainable materials to our customers in Asia. The change is also a hope that more end customers will explore their possibilities of starting to produce with recycled plastic. We will continue to invest and work to stay at the forefront to encourage the increased use of recycled plastic materials, and are truly excited about the opportunities ahead” says Magnus Lindahl, CEO China.
