The German Packaging Award has been awarded to Nordenia's innovative NorCell film.
At the award ceremony on September 24 in Nuremberg, Nordenia was honoured for the successful implementation of a concept to produce innovative foamed films. Each year the German Packaging Institute awards the prize to the most creative packaging ideas. A food packaging suitable for high pressure processing developed by Nordenia was also nominated for the prizes alongside NorCell. Both products were designed by the Group's own research and development company Nordenia Technologies GmbH and brought to market maturity with the help of selected manufacturing sites.
The German Packaging Institute emphasised that Nordenia was the first company to successfully implement the NorCell technology in flexible packaging. "We are very pleased to receive an award for this innovative approach,” said Dr Herbert Bader, Research and Development Manager of the Nordenia Group, who accepted the prize together with NorCell project manager Matthias Perick.
"This is a clear sign that we should focus more intensively on technologies that make the manufacture of intelligent, sustainable films possible.” By using a physical, controlled foaming process, the NorCell technology significantly reduces the weight of flexible packaging without decreasing the film thickness. These "light-weight films” weigh up to 40 per cent less than conventional films. The material is used intelligently and efficiently – thereby Nordenia is taking the growing importance of the topics of sustainability and the conservation of resources into account.
NorCell films are especially suitable for applications in the food, pet food and hygiene sectors. The foaming process takes place according to a process patented by the Mucell company. Nordenia is the exclusive partner throughout Europe in the area of flexible packaging and film products.
